About me

I’m Harriet, a qualified Hill and Moorland Leader, chartered geologist and lover of all things outdoors. Whether it’s hiking, climbing, camping, scrambling, running or anything in-between, I’m here for it!

I was lucky to grow up in the North Yorkshire countryside with a family who instilled in me a love and respect for the great outdoors. Hunting for fossils on the beach at Ravenscar, playing in the wild and remote becks of Arkengarthdale, or messing around with delinquent ponies in the mud of the Vale of York; if it was outdoors I’d be doing it.

I cemented my enthusiasm for the natural world by studying Geology at Cardiff University, and I was soon exploring the lush valleys and rugged coastline of South Wales. It wasn’t all textbooks, lectures and nights out. Through international fieldtrips to study the landscapes in places like Cyprus, Spain and France, I discovered a love for travel and exploration.

Now based in Leeds, I have a career as a geoenvironmental scientist, where I work to understand and mitigate the effects of land contamination in the UK and further afield.

However, my love for the outdoors hasn’t stopped now I’m behind a desk. Whether I’m hiking in the Yorkshire Dales or on international multi-day treks, I continue to embrace my connection to nature and geology.

I was fortunate enough to have a 12 month sabbatical in 2023, where I ticked off many of my bucket list destinations. Travelling around Europe, Patagonia, New Zealand and East Asia opened my eyes to both the incredible landscapes and the environmental challenges of accessing the outdoors.

I became a Qualified Hill and Moorland Leader in 2024, with the aim of sharing my passion for geoscience and equipping others with the skills to be able to enjoy the outdoors as much as I do.

Welcome to my little corner of the internet, where I share my tales from the trail, travel diaries, route recommendations and much much more.
